Meet the Maker – Sarah of Bear and Bug Ceramics

Hi, I’m Sarah — the hands and heart behind Bear and Bug Ceramics.

I’m a 43-year-old mum of two wonderfully wild boys, and I found pottery at a time when I really needed something for myself. What started as a creative outlet two years ago quickly became a deep, joyful obsession. From the first time I touched clay, I knew I’d fallen in love.

I now spend as much time as I can in my home studio, covered in glaze splatters, surrounded by half-finished characters and curvy pots that make me smile — and hopefully make you smile too.

I work in both wheel throwing and hand building, and I love the freedom of moving between the two. Some days I’m forming smooth, functional mugs and bowls on the wheel; other days I’m sculpting cheeky ducks, curious chickens, and plump little pumpkins that seem to come to life as I work.

My Style

My work is playful, characterful, and often inspired by nature — especially fruit forms, animals, and the lovely wobbles that come from making by hand. I’m drawn to soft curves, joyful imperfections, and layered glazes that catch the light in surprising ways.

Everything I make is unique. I don’t use moulds or repeats — just my hands, some tools, and a lot of personality. Whether it’s a wonky mug or a big-eyed chuck, each piece is made slowly, thoughtfully, and with a bit of warmth baked in.

Why I Make

Bear and Bug Ceramics is my creative escape — but more than that, it’s a way to connect. I believe pottery should be felt, not just used. It should make you smile, bring comfort, or spark a memory. I want my pieces to feel like they have a little soul — like they were made just for you.

Whether you’re here for a functional mug or a cheeky little chicken, I’m so grateful you stopped by.

Thanks for being part of this journey.
